Meladramas

My friend Hiroshi took me to a fabulous place called DERORI...

I had a wonderful time there.
It was a total art experience...

There was this beautiful light box art...

The design of the place is eclectic:
A basement room with a bar and chiseled cement walls
with silver pipes.
Wrought iron fixtures and lamps, blue velvet drapes, framing a huge mirror.
Pillows, candles, pearl inlay tables...
The music jumped from Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground,
Patti Smith, David Bowie, to Laurie Anderson & Beethoven...

And that's just this particular night.

The food was a mix of health food and ethnic
but served so uniquely.
This was the place I didn't know I was in the mood for.
Special thanks to Akio, Takichi, & Kazuko for this treasure.
And of course to Hiroshi for showing me this place.
It's located in Shibuya,
but I felt like I was in late 70's early 80's NYC, downtown.
I felt in an element long passed, but returned in a new light.

A great evening...

I'm preparing for the end of my show at Cafe CoCoLo.
Early Tuesday morning, it comes down...
But my news for today is:

I have another show planned for the merry merry month of May
at Jazz Spot "J", Shinjuku.
Meladramas: On Stage At Last!
will be condensed, and travelling, cherie...
At this show, there will be 16 of my computer art prints in mats and frames for
exhibition, and for sale.

More details soon.

I'm still thinking of the enchanting place I visited last night...

They call you ecstasy

Nothing ever sticks to you

Not velcro, not scotch tape

Not my arms dipped in glue

Not if i wrap myself in nylon

A piece of duct tape down my back

Love pierced the arrow with the twelve

And i can't get you back

Ah, ecstasy

Ecstasy

Ah, ecstasy

Ecstasy

-Lou Reed

“Tehani”

This is my newest computer art piece, "Tehani"...
This title is Tahitian for "caressed by the fragrance of flowers".
On these cold February days,
I find myself island dreaming...

I had a great night at Club KEI this past Friday
night.
Stan was in top form,
as always,
and Aoki-san was down widdit...
Together they make a terrific duo,
that's always a pleasure for me to play with.
I presented Kei with a framed and matted print of my computer art piece
"LIVE JAZZ!" from 2001.
It looks fabulous in her club.
We've worked and shared a lot, together, Kei, Stan, & me...

Today is the opening of the
Japan Grand Prix International Orchid Festival 2005.

It is an annual Tokyo Dome event
that I so look forward to every February!
This will be my fifth consecutive year to attend.
It’s always a thrill to see what new “hybrid” will be introduced.
Along with the “prizewinners”...
I just love wandering about and taking in the fragrance...

Tonight’s my gig at Club Kei...
I will be joined by Hiromu Aoki on piano, and Stan Gilbert on bass.

See you there!

Till next time... ‘Mela

My opening party at Cafe CoCoLo was last night.
It was a great success.
Many of my friends were there.

Deepest thanks to my friend Hiroshi
for his support throughout-
Also to my son, Michio for all his help
with the preparation work,
and his flyer photo.
To Wayne Gabel at The Asahi Shimbum
for his listing...
And to all my friends who showed support for me by showing up.
Also to Tomoya Hara for his guitar accompianment.

My short set list:

I'm just a Lucky So & So - Duke Ellington, Mack David
Sunrise, Sunset - Jerry Bock- music , Sheldon Harnick- lyrics
On the Sunny Side of the Street - Jimmy McHugh
Vincent (Starry Starry Night) - Don McLean

I hope to play again with Tomoya in the near future...

My next live music performance
will be on February 18th, Friday,
at Club Kei, Akasaka.
There, I will be appearing with my long time friend,
the king of groove and nasty jokes,
the fabulous Stan Gilbert, on bass,
and another long-time musical friend, the elegant
Hiromu Aoki, will be on piano.

I hope to see you there!

WOW, the show is all set up!
At the crack of dawn, I was on the train, on the way to Cafe CoCoLo.
Hiroshi met me there, and also Kuriyama-san,the manager.
Together, we were like well-oiled machinery, getting the show set up
before the lunch crowd.

Combine all this with the help I had from my son, Michio,
to prepare things, I'm feelin' like a lucky so and so
about now...

And P.S., I hope Michio scores BIGTIME on his college exam today...

Till next time... 'Mela
